Mental disorders, also called mental health disorders, are alterations in thinking, emotions, behavior, and mood regulation.
These can cause significant distress or affect the personal, social, and occupational functioning of those who experience them (American Psychiatric Association, 2022).

How do they manifest?
Mental disorders can vary in their intensity and the way they present.
Some people experience mild and temporary symptoms, while others face more severe and persistent manifestations that significantly impact their quality of life.
What causes them?
They are not normal reactions to stress or specific life difficulties.
Mental disorders are genuine medical conditions, resulting from the interaction of various factors:
Biological: neurochemical imbalances or genetic predisposition.
Psychological: past traumas, inadequate coping styles.
Social: isolation, poverty, discrimination.
Common Types of Mental Disorders
Mood disorders: such as major depression or bipolar disorder.
Anxiety disorders: such as generalized anxiety disorder, panic attacks, or specific phobias.
Psychotic disorders: such as schizophrenia, characterized by a disconnection from reality.
Eating disorders: such as anorexia nervosa or bulimia.
Personality disorders: inflexible patterns of thinking and behavior.
Neurodevelopmental disorders: such as ADHD and autism spectrum disorder.
What should you know?
It’s important to understand that mental disorders are not a sign of weakness or lack of willpower. They are medical conditions that require diagnosis and treatment, just like any other physical illness.
If you suspect you may be going through one, do not face it alone or ignore it.
Seek guidance from a health professional to receive the support and help you need to improve your quality of life.
